The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM), supported by the Western Cape Government Department of Social Development, has designed an annual skills development programme for unemployed women and youth that will afford participants an opportunity to undergo hairdressing training.
This year’s training ran from 2 June to 23 June 2025, accommodating 14 participants from Stellenbosch, and concluded with a certificate ceremony held on Monday, 23 June 2025, celebrating the successful completion of the programme and recognizing the hard work and dedication of the participants.
The programme aims to equip participants with practical skills that open doors to independence, empowerment and economic resilience.
Councillor Minnie Petersen (Portfolio Holder: Rural and Social Development) shared the following sentiment: “Because it’s Youth Month, we want to empower our young people and help them become self-sufficient and independent to thrive and contribute to society. We also wish to provide women with the necessary skills to take care of their own financial needs.”
The training course consists of both practical and theoretical components, which include the following:
- Basic hair therapy
- Personal health and hygiene
- Occupational health and safety in the workplace
- Client consultation
- Salon administration
Along with the practical and theoretical components, participants recieved a start-up toolkit that includes one of each of the following items:
- Professional 200-watt salon hairdryer
- Brush set – five Rake brushes of different sizes
- Professional ceramic straightener (flat iron)
- One set of small, medium and large rollers
- Combs – teasing, wide tooth, rat tail, two tail, regular, pitchfork
- Scissors
- Black towel
- Protective clothing/uniform for all participants – at the beginning of training
Now, upon successful completion of the programme, participants will have the opportunity to start their own businesses and build a better future.

Die Kaapse Wynland Distriksmunisipaliteit (KWDM), in vennootskap met die Wes-Kaapse Regering se Departement van Maatskaplike Ontwikkeling, het ’n haarkappery-opleidingsprogram in Groendal, Franschhoek bekendgestel met die doel om werklose vroue en jongmense te bemagtig. Die program loop van 2 Junie tot 23 Junie 2025 en akkommodeer 14 deelnemers van Stellenbosch wat aan teoretiese en praktiese opleiding blootgestel word. Die modules dek basiese haarterapie, persoonlike gesondheid en higiëne, beroepsgesondheid en -veiligheid, kliëntkonsultasie en salonadministrasie. Elke deelnemer ontvang professionele hulpmiddels, soos ’n salonhaardroër, keramiektang, ’n stel borsels en kamme, rollers, ’n skêr, ’n handdoek en beskermende klere. Die inisiatief is ontwerp om deelnemers toe te rus met die nodige vaardighede en hulpbronne om hul eie besigheid te begin en ’n volhoubare lewensbestaan te vestig. Die begunstigdes sal ná voltooiing beter geposisioneer wees vir ekonomiese onafhanklikheid en selfstandige werk in die skoonheidsbedryf.
