Mandela Day

67 entities collab for Mandela Day

On the 18 July 2023, colleagues from the Community Development and Planning Services (CDPS) spend the day giving their time for Madiba Day in Touwsrivier, Breede Valley.

CDPS joined hands with Touwsrivier Tourism on their Fab Collab initiative. Internally led by Municipal Health Services in collaboration with Disaster-, LED- and Rural & Social Development Units, they supported the Winter Warmers Drive.

Touwsrivier is known for its extremely cold winters and there is always a need for blankets and warm clothes within the community therefore the Winter Warmers Drive was important. Winter clothes and blankets were donated by officials of all 5 regional offices. Together they donated 174 bags of warm clothing, 12 bags of shoes, 30 duvets and through the Disaster Management unit, CWDM donated 50 duvets and 50 food hampers to the community of Touwsriver. Through these donations and that of others, 6 organisations were supported with clothes and blankets as well as 6 creches were able to receive blankets.

On the day, various projects took place across the town, the clean-up and maintenance of public areas and buildings such as parks, sidewalks, bridges, historical buildings and creches. 4500 people in the community were fed and 87 elderly community members were treated to an excursion and spoiled with a three-course meal. An emergency demonstration by public services educated learners on best practices during an emergency and to showcase career opportunities in their field.

This initiative grew from the notion that the efforts of Madiba Day could be far greater and reach so many more through collaboration. 67 entities, including government and private organisations and businesses came together by donating their time, services, goods and funds for the town of Touwsrivier.

The success of the Fab collab for Madiba Day has once again showed the great things that are possible when private and public entities work together towards a common goal. CWDM believes these collaborations are imperative to brighten the future of our communities.
